As I sit here looking out at ugly skies and brown leafless trees, I decided I wanted to write about color. So I turned to one of the best floral blogs on the web by Holly Heider Chapple. Holly and I have been friends for years. She did my daughter's wedding as well as I recommended her to many of my brides when I was an event planner. I have never met any florist who knows more about all flowers from the most formal to wild flowers to using herbs and the unusual. In 2011 she began The Chapple Designer Conference where Holly and other florists attend workshops. They have just returned from a workshop with Francoises Weeks.
Woodland Designs by Francoise Weeks - I think this is most interesting for weddings in the Shenandoah Valley and on the Skyline Drive because it uses house plants, mosses, vines, barks, twigs, and other natural elements which are part of the Blue Ridge Mountains. "Francoise’s magical woodland designs are created on the new European bouquet holder created by Oasis." said Holly.
A Ribbon Crown --- no flower solution....
Holly How To Directions - 'To make the crown I twisted two pipe cleaners together making one long pipe cleaner. 2 pipe cleaners is typically big enough for most little girls. If the child is young you may need to clip off a bit of the pipe cleaner. Next I created a pile of 2 inch long ribbon strips. The little pieces of ribbon were tied onto the pipe cleaner by tying a simple double knot. You will want to start tying the ribbon onto the pipe cleaner at one of the ends. Tie the ribbons onto the pipe cleaner one knot next to the other. Continue doing this until the entire pipe cleaner is full of knotted ribbon. When you complete the halo you can give it a final hair cut if you have any ribbon pieces that are too long.'

Wild Flowers --- does not mean cheap flowers...
Holly comments - 'As we enter into the new year, many brides will start to define the look of their wedding flowers. I thought now would be a great time to let brides know that choosing “wild flowers” as a style type is awesome, but only if you choose the look because it’s what you prefer and not because you believe this is a cheaper option. As a floral designer with a focus on brides and wedding flowers, I am often asked to design wedding flowers that look like “wild flowers.” This request is often followed by, “I want a bouquet that looks like it was just gathered from the field.” Wild flowers for weddings is a look or a vibe. The look can be obtained by a designer that is carefully gathering, styling and arranging the flowers. As long as the bride is choosing this type of design because it’s the look that most appeals to her, all will be great. However, some brides believe that asking for wildflowers indicates a cheaper design option, and that is simply not the case. Unfortunately, there is not a free wild flower field waiting somewhere for florists to pop by and cut from. Many designers myself included, work with local growers or grow as well. These locally grown stems are every bit as valuable as flowers from the wholesaler. In fact, many of my local growers charge more per stem then the regular flower wholesaler. In actuality, these blooms are specialty blooms, there is a limited amount of production, they are ultra fresh and super unique. Remember, each flower is a miracle, each bloom takes months to grow, hours to cultivate and harvest. The flowers that will be a part of your wedding day are works of art!'
Thanks to Holly for all of her words of wisdom. We will come back to her for more ideas next month. If you can't wait, visit TheFullBouquetBlog.com. Holly's studio is located in Lucketts, Virginia.

One thing is certain men and women do not always speak the same language when it comes to romantic gifts. Sometimes I think the men have it easier than the women.
A woman will always accept flowers and chocolate if the flowers are also there. Chocolate by itself just doesn't do it. Of course, diamonds will always be accepted as well and are a wonderful surprise.
But what should we get the men. Most men I know do not openly let you know what they would like to have. Perhaps seasonal football tickets but this is not a birthday it is a romantic holiday so what is a woman to do.
Here are some options for both sexes......
1. Gift Cards - Give a woman or man a gift card...... drop by Mane Attraction Salon and Wellness Spa in Winchester. You can also go to Live An Artful Life, an USA Made in America artisan gallery in The Plains, VA. Both Harrisonburg and Winchester Downtown areas have wonderful small business shops for unique purchases.
2. Take a Hike in the Mountains or by the Rivers - How about a special acitivity -- like a wonderful hike in Virginia or West Virginia. Time with the other person is worth more than money can buy. Trails across the state offer paths from easy walking trails to more challenging for families who are experienced hikers. The leaves are off the trees, affording clear and amazing views for miles around.
3. Share your LOVE What are you most passionate about? Art? Music? History? Check out the museums under Go Blue Ridge Travel for children, history, art, quilts, civil war and much more. Just pick your favorite under Activities. The Blue Ridge Shenandoah Valley has it all. Valentine’s Weekend is a great time to share your love of music, art, history and more with your family and start building great traditions together.
4. All in one Resorts – Great for family togethering with tons of activities but also if mom and dad do want some time for just the two of you, programs to keep the kids entertained and on-site babysitting services. Check our Bryce Resort, a very kids friendly resort.
5. Go Old School Take your kids to one of Virginia’s, Maryland's, or West Virginia's charming small towns and let them delight in the old-fashion goodness of real soda fountains, local diners, farmers markets, cool old train stations and true Americana.
6. Sweets for the sweets If chocolate is a must for your Valentine’s amusement, take pride in the sweets you buy. Visit local chocolatiers and candy shops. Cupcake Novelties has custom decorated oreo cookies - a real man favorite!
7. Put LOVE at the Heart of Your Virginia Vacation Can you think of a more perfect photo opp for Valentine’s then you and your family in front of a giant LOVE sculpture? There are more than 20 to choose from in Virginia. Make a weekend out of visiting as many Virginia is for Lovers LOVEworks as you can, take your picture and share it out to send your love to your family and friends.
8. Dining is always a great choice. A wonderful culinary experience over great wine is great for both the guy and the gal. Great wine, a fire in the fireplace, a beautiful restaurant setting. The Blue Ridge Shenandoah Valley is a meca for great restaurants. Check out the ones on Go Blue Ridge Travel including 868 Estate's Vineyard's Grandale Restaurant.
9. Movie and a Culinary Experience. Each year the movie industry premiere's the Valentine movie of the year. This year it will be Safe Haven based on the romance novel by Nicholas Sparks. Picking the 2nd Annual Valentine Dinner and Movie at the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema on February 14th will solve all your problems. You can pick the Sweetheart package that comes with a Music by SV Jazz Ensemble, a Free Photo, a Rose, Chocolates, and your romantic words to on the screen. Your problem is solved!
Valentine’s is all about love. Just remember that. It is not the gift, it is your actions that really speak more than words.

One of the most wonderful exciting times is when a woman hears the words, "Will you marry me?" But once those words have settled in, then reality sets in with wedding couples: "How are we going to celebrate this special event and afford to celebrate it without breaking the bank?"
- Happiness #1 - A marriage needs to start out with finances on the table.
- Reality #1 - - Get Real and Stay Real.
So before you come to the show this Sunday at Millwood Station, here are some venues for you to consider. Some will be at the show for you to have a face to face discussion on your options. Others are partners with us in all the many events we do through out the year. Blue Ridge Bridal Show and Go Blue Ridge Travel are the Shenandoah Valley's wedding resource guide that will help you.
The wedding reception can consume the major part of your budget so picking a venue wisely should be your number one concern. Reception sites set their costs based on what they are providing for you. The least expensive are the outdoor facilities such as a barn, tented site options. A couple has to have a reality check that venues not offering a 'weather proof option' but extremely affordable will fit their dream wedding. Seeing beautiful outdoor pictures is wonderful when the sun is out and it is warm. "I always suggested a bride and groom come to a venue on a bad weather day and make sure if this was their day they would be totally happy. My worst memories as an event planner was seeing not only the bride and groom but the guests freeze to death during a wedding reception."
Best value locations are those that provide you with the basics for one price such as tables, chairs, sometimes basic linens. These are often restaurants and hotels who own these ammendies and can afford to include these costs in their fees. The hotel sites will often have the most room to negotiate if you are also taking rooms with them.
Extremely desirable wedding venue options offering you the opportunity to be on the property for the weekend of your event but more expensive are the country inns, resorts, bed and breakfasts. One way to make these venues fit your budget is to narrow your guest list - less people - less cost. The major discussion that needs to occur between you and the groom before you talk to anyone else is what you both want your memories to be. This is your wedding as long as you pay for it. Involving your parents then opens the door to their opinions as well.
What's Hot in Wedding Venues in the Blue Ridge!
The Blue Ridge Shenandoah Valley is one of the most beautiful wedding destinations in the United States. From historic hotels - manor homes, country inns, mountain resorts, historic homes, museums, hotels, and private event venues, Blue Ridge Brides have unlimited options. There are also some very unique options including caverns, barns, river sites, and more. Few U.S. destinations offer the diversity of reception venues found in the northern Blue Ridge region.
The $ symbol is only to give you an idea of price. Depending on the date, size of wedding, reception venues are always open to working with you. Call and Ask your Questions!

Congratulations on your engagement! I’m sure you are busy with the planning process. Top priority is reserving the church/venue and photographer which allow you to lock in your wedding date. Then it’s time to begin thinking about your dress! Many girls have been thinking about what they will wear on their wedding day long before they had the guy. Yet, others become a little overwhelmed by all the designer gowns they see in bridal magazines and on The Knot. So, what’s hot this season?
Lace: Thanks to the continued influence of Kate Middleton, lace continues to be everywhere. It is seen in sleeves, sheer illusion necklines, and lace overlays. Many dresses are all lace with or without the embellishments of pearls or Swarovski crystals. Lace is truly timeless and versatile, creating a look for everyone.
Portrait Backs: Every bride loves a beautiful back. During the ceremony the back of the dress is what everyone is watching. So why not add a little intrigue with a keyhole back or illusion sheer panel across the back embellished with just the perfect accent of crystals or pearls. Sexy and sophisticated is this look!
Fabrics: Besides lace, fabrics tend to be soft and flowing. Romantic and feminine are the words for this season. Lots of layers and ruffles prevail as does the more couture, clean lines of simple elegant gowns.
Color: There is very little white with brides preferring diamond white, ivory, or other shades of champagne, oyster, and pearl. Also trending are dresses with color. Blush, silver, and light blue can be seen again this year, as well as gowns in bold reds, blues, and greens. Accent colors continue to be a popular option in coordinating with the bridesmaids.
Accessories: Lots of belts! Matching the gown or in an accent color, girls are looking to add more detail and interest. Feathers remain popular in hair jewelry, fascinators, and veils. I am even starting to see more traditional veils with a blusher (my personal favorite!). Finally, the shoes. What can I say, anything goes….traditional pumps, peep toes, sandals, flip flops, blue shoes, shoes to match the wedding colors, and even cowboy boots! It’s all about personalizing your wedding.
Potomac Bridals of Hagerstown Maryland will be presenting a fashion show at the Blue Ridge Bridal Show. I invite you to come and meet us, see some of the current wedding gown styles, and take advantage of this opportunity to meet other wedding vendors.
Thanks to Joyce Lee of Potomac Bridals for this Blog. 'Remember the Blue Ridge Overhead' --- same dress lower prices here in the Shenandoah Valley.

The last few events we have done, I have noticed something which I would like to address. I am talking about lighting. Now, this is not just the lighting your entertainment provider will be providing, but also your venues lighting. It is important to keep how your reception area will be lit when looking at venues. (I will touch on provided lighting in a minute).
When looking for a venue, keep in mind these things in regards to lighting:
- What time of day will your reception be? Afternoon and early evening receptions can pose a challenge when trying to soften the light in a room. There is a venue here in my area which is absolutely gorgeous, with a nice dance area, hardwood floors and excellent staff. But is has about 30 foot, floor to ceiling windows all around the room. At night, this is spectacular. When the sun is out….eh…not so much. There is absolutely no way to darken the room.
- How accessible at the dimmers for the lights? Many venues will not allow you to have access to the dimming controls of the lighting in the room. Which can cause an issue if you are ready to do your dance, and no one can be found to turn the lights down. Along these lines, also check to see….
- How easy the lights are to dim. We recently worked a room where you have to turn the lights down at 7 different places throughout the room to get the entire room dimmed. This would not have been an issue had we not had to have them down for the introductions, up for dinner, then back down for the dancing.
Now, you may be asking yourself, why is this so important to the success of my wedding reception? The answer is amazingly simply…..people are less inhibited and more likely to dance when the room is dimly lit or the lights are totally off. Think about it one time. Have you ever been somewhere what a light of people are dancing and the room is brightly lit? It is extremely rare this happens.
The solution to these issues is to make sure your entertainment provider is going to be able to provide the proper lighting you want for your reception. Any professional entertainment company should be able to tailor their lighting to your needs. Be is simple and elegant to a full on dance party, ask your entertainer what they plan on using. There are three basic lighting options when it comes to receptions:
- Accent lighting (also known as uplight). This is a popular trend in recent years. It involves placing small led programmable lights all around your room to shine up onto the walls of your venue to provide a soft, intimate feel for your dinner and reception. The lights can be made to match the colors of your wedding, and provide a nice feel to your dinner space without having to have the bright, overhead lights of the venue on (at some point in 2013, Sights and Sounds will begin offering accent lighting). Most companies price these lights out on a per light base, and the cost is normally base on how large your reception room is.
- Wash lighting. At the bare minimum, your entertainer should be providing you with some sort of dance area wash system. This is simply a lighting package which will provide a soft, background wash to your dance floor area. These should be turned on when your dancing begins, and then it is turned on, all overhead lighting in the room should be turned off. Keeping overhead lighting on in the room will cause the entertainer’s lighting to be much less effective.
- Dance Floor Lighting. This is a general term, but essentially, it is some type of moving effect to be use to create a high energy atmosphere in the room. There are hundreds of lighting out there which would be included in this, but the main point of them all would be to provide some type of patterned light source, normally programmed to be in time with the music. If your entertainer is using a dance lighting system, it is a MUST that all lighting provided by the venue in your room be turned off. A dance lighting system is completely wasted if half the lights in the venue are still on, and it will cause an odd effect in any pictures and video that is taken.
Now keep in mind, these are just the basics of lighting. There are many options entertainment companies offer for your special day, including special monograms, spotlighting, lasers, and other unique ways to make your room pop. The key is to know what you want, and then just ask how the company you hire can make their lighting fit into your vision.

Why is it that weddings are all about the female when the male is the one who initiates the great event? "My son-in-law was quick to point out to me that when he could only find one book available that was written for the 'groom'", said Nancy Craun, producer of the Blue Ridge Bridal Shows.
"Four years ago with the help of Alpha Voyages Travel Agency, we began an initiative to recognize the male part of a wedding event. The results have been fantastic."
Mary June (MJ) Williams of Alpha Voyages Travel Agency has over thirty years experience in the travel world. MJ is a Preferred Sandals Agent, a Master Cruise Counselor, and a Vacation.com Vignette Host. In the fall of 2012, Mary June (MJ) and four of her agents completed their certification for ‘Sandals WeddingMoons Specialist.’ The agency is located in Winchester, Virginia serving a sixty mile radius of the Shenandoah Valley.
Unlike most Bridal Shows, Blue Ridge Bridal Show Salutes Grooms by giving them their own contest with prizes that only the men can win. Alpha Voyages is the sponsor of 4th annual Grooms Honeymoon Challenge. Grooms have won trips to from Hawaii to the Bahamas.
"Each year we have played a different game from baseball to football to bowling.” said MJ. “Last year we started a a pre-show challenge which was very popular. Grooms work their way thru steps which help them earn a ‘Honeymoon Travel Specialist Certificate’. In the process of going thru these steps, grooms learn about how to book a honeymoon that will be stress free. My goal is that they gain confidence and knowledge of the benefits of working with a travel agent.”
At the show, grooms will come to the Go Blue Ridge Travel table and receive their certificates finding out their total points earned prior to the show. There are two more challenges to participate in. 'Roll the Dice' will decide who are the top 5 finalists. 'The Lucky Seven' will decide on the four runner ups and the winner of the FREE Honeymoon Stay. "This is going to be a lot of fun letting both couples and vendors relax and have fun together", said Nancy Craun.
The Honeymoon Giveaway is a “Seven Night Stay at one of 20 different Starwood Resort Locations.” It only includes the overnight stay. Transportation, Food, and Activities are not included.

The largest Shenandoah Valley Regional Bridal Show targets brides and wedding professionals in a 100 mile radius. By partnering with
Go Blue Ridge Travel, Blue Ridge Bridal Show showcases the Blue Ridge and northern Shenandoah Valley as a national wedding destination.
Wedding Destinations is the new national phenomenal letting local and national brides look at a new option in their wedding planning focus. It is hard to imagine the Shenandoah Valley competing with the Caribbean, Hawaii, Charleston, SC, Outer Banks as a international destination for brides but the valley has over the last five years changed drastically for what it offers brides and grooms as a destination. Go Blue Ridge Travel (GoBRT) and Blue Ridge Bridal (BRBS) is partnering on a marketing campaign to promote the region as a national wedding destination.

Sunday, January 20th, Blue Ridge Bridal will offer a consumer show in Winchester, Virginia where brides and grooms can meet the wedding professionals who can make their wedding perfect. The goal of the show is to give couples a fun four hour event celebrating what it means to be a bride and groom. The fun started January 1st with two contests with brides and grooms each going thru steps to earn points prior to the show. These contests will culminate in a competitive game competition at the show. A Bride will win a
$1000 Cash from Go Blue Ridge Travel and a
Groom will win a Honeymoon from Alpha Voyages Travel Agency Winchester VA in Winchester.

At the same time, couples can meet face to face with wedding professionals getting new ideas and booking the wedding vendors they need for their special day. This year the show has a strong focus on the small wedding professional. New to the show will be
Mama's Caboose, a full service mobile kitchen company based in Harrisonburg, Virginia and serving the Shenandoah Valley Interstate 81 Corridor. Offering first class fare for any size party from the wedding rehearsal dinner to the brunch the morning after. Couples are not limited to a particular venue but can pick a "corn field" if they want to celebrate a special event in a unique venue.

We are also spotlighting several new photographers. La Belle Photography of Martinsburg, West Virginia takes the more traditional approach to capturing an event and Moments by Misty of Winchester, VA offer a unique new look for the non-traditionalist. Every couple also needs accommodations. The leading hotels in the region including Historic Gateway Holiday Inn Winchester, VA will also be at the show to assist in room blocks.
Working as partners, Blue Ridge Bridal Show has two Disc Jockey companies who will MC the show. Sights and Sounds Productions Martinsburg WV will handle the Texas Holdem - Black Jack Competition for the Grooms and Special Occasions Entertainment will interview the top five finalists in the Silver Suitcase $1000 Giveaway in a fun game 'Say Yes to the Blue Ridge Shenandoah Valley'.
